Joy

Joy.

Happiness.

Love.

There are moments in life that are so good, they make us forget anything bad has ever happened to us. There are moments that ease the pain. Think about those moments when your storm is present. Think about the joy you'll feel when it passes. Think of how much more intense the goodness feels now that you've made it out alive.

The way that joy creeps up on you. Starting in your chest, or maybe even your stomach. The butterflies that make your heart speed up just a little bit. Sometimes your hands shake. Sometimes tears make themselves known in your eyes, and you let them fall. It spreads through your body, warming up your limbs. Your hands become tingly. It makes it's way to your head, where it fills up every inch of you, so you smile to make more room for it. Your eyes get wide as it tries to escape you to infect those around you.

Don't let go of these moments. Don't let anyone else tell you these moments don't matter. You battled thunder and met lightning at it's source so you could feel like this one day.

Whether it's a song on the radio, or a hand you get to hold every day, your joy matters. The smile so big it hurts or a smile so subtle only you can feel it. The way you feel the heaviness on your shoulders suddenly become feathers gathered to fly away.

Whether it's a friendly dog who wags it's tail when you say hello, or meeting a goal you've worked for years to accomplish, all of it makes a difference. The hugs so hard, they feel like a puzzle piece you've been struggling to find. The way you get to erase the sadness for a moment to remember what you're like without it.

Whether it's a movie you've seen 100 times or a friend you haven't seen in 10 years, that feeling is important. The way your eyes crinkle when you laugh so much your sides hurt. The way you get to breathe freely without the weight of worry heavy on your chest.

There are demons in this world who will try to take the joy from you. The demons who will crawl inside your head and make you feel childish for being so happy. It's a trick. Some demons are just thoughts waiting for a moment of vulnerability to take back your mind. That anxiety hiding around the corner. Squeeze out the moments of joy for as long as you can defend yourself.

The demons you will not see coming are the human forms. The people who see you happy and don't understand. They will see your face light up and feel the warmth radiating off of you in your moments of bliss, and they will try to tear it all down. They will try to transfer the ice in their veins into yours. They will try to distract you and close your eyes so you cannot spread your light. These demons are easier to defeat.

Stand your ground. Look them in the face. Don't lose your smile. Melt the ice. Ooze your joy until the demons understand they cannot win. Joy is contagious, and they might be immune, but you are not. You can still feel every ounce of whatever it is that makes your soul come alive. Spread your joy and create an army. The demons will never stand a chance.

The moments of joy can seem to be so fleeting, random, and small, but every single one is too important to ignore. If you see a beautiful flower, pick it. If you hear a song that makes you dance uncontrollably, turn it up. Pet a dog, watch a movie, go for a hike, eat some ice cream, call your mom, don't answer your phone, sit in silence. If you love a person, tell them. If you are happy, feel it.
